Daily word game · find the four groups

Word Blast

Sixteen words. Four hidden themes. Four wrong answers and you're out.

16
words
4
groups

Play Word Blast free online. You get sixteen words and you have to sort them into four groups of four. Nobody tells you what the groups are.

It's less about knowing long words and more about spotting what things have in common. That's what makes it good — anyone can win a round.

It plays in any browser, and there are apps with daily challenges if you want more than one a day.

What is Word Blast?

Word Blast puts sixteen words on the table and tells you they make four groups of four. Working out what links them is the whole puzzle, and you have to submit each group before your lives run out.

The difficulty is deliberate. Several words will look like they obviously go together, and usually at least one of them belongs somewhere else entirely. That overlap is the game.

How Word Blast works

Pick four words you think share a theme and submit them. Get it right and the group locks in and its theme is revealed. Get it wrong and you lose one of your four lives.

The colour key

Solved – the group is right and the theme shows up.

One away – three of your four are correct — swap one and try again.

Wrong – the group is wrong and it costs you a life.

How to play Word Blast step by step

  1. Read all sixteen first

Don't submit anything on your first look. Read every word and notice which ones could plausibly sit in more than one group.

  2. Start with the one you're sure of

There's nearly always one link that's obvious. Clear that first and the board drops from sixteen words to twelve.

  3. Be suspicious of the easy group

If five words look like colours, one of them belongs somewhere else. That's the trap, every time.

  4. Use 'one away' properly

Being told you're one away is real information. Change the word you were least sure about, not the one you like least.

  5. Leave the vague group till last

Once three groups are locked in, the fourth solves itself — even if you never quite work out why.

Tips and strategies for Word Blast

Think about kinds of word, not topics

Groups are often things like 'words that can go before CAKE' rather than simple categories.

Count your candidates

If you can name five words for one theme, you haven't found the theme yet.

Say them out loud

Links based on sound — homophones, hidden words, silent letters — almost never show up on the page.

Spend a life on purpose

If two arrangements look equally likely and you've got lives in hand, testing beats sitting there.

Question the group you already 'solved'

When nothing else fits, the one you decided on early is usually the wrong one.

Frequently asked questions

How do you play Word Blast?

You get sixteen words that make four hidden groups of four. Pick four you think go together and submit them. Four wrong guesses ends the round.

How many mistakes can you make?

Four. Each wrong group costs a life, so clear the one you're most confident about first.

Is Word Blast free?

Yes, it's free in your browser, and there are apps on the major stores too.

What does 'one away' mean?

Three of the four words you picked do belong together. Swap the one you were least sure about and try again.

Is Word Blast good for children?

Yes. There's nothing violent in it, and the connections often make it a nice one to solve together as a family.

Conclusion

Word Blast uses a different muscle from the guessing games. It's not about how many words you know — it's about noticing that four unrelated-looking words quietly share something.

When you want a fixed set of rules again, the daily Waffle Game board is there with its six words and fifteen swaps.
